As of September of this year, 2009,I'm an 'octogenarian' and retired school teacher who did no running until age two score and ten! I began jogging between Bronte and Bondi, before swimming at Clovelly with a best friend, very early, every morning throughout the year. This led to entering some 10km fun runs, and in 1984 the first of 17 (or more by now) City-to-Surf runs. I ran my first (of 20+ half marathons) at age 60 and my first of now 10 marathons at 70 .... the 2000 Sydney Host City Marathon. I was lucky enough to be able to run the New York City Marathon in 2003 where I carried the Australian Flag during the Friendship Run from UN to Tavern-on-the-Green, Central Park. At Canberra marathon 2001, I established an age category W70-74 Canberra Marathon record and in 2004 an age category W70-74 Australian Ultra Marathon record for 50km ... the same 2 records again in 2006 for the next age category, W75-79. And now it's August 2009 and heading towards the close of another running year, with only two more Half Marathons to run and a couple of shorter events,...all goals accomplished with times quite a bit faster than in 2008. Life's good!

Horrible!

I couldn't get out before the heat and couldn't bear to think about late evening when I like to relax, so, stupidly out I went in the middle of the day, on a day when the temperature was 32 degrees! Some shade on Diamond Fields Road didn't seem to make much difference and it was a struggle just walking back to the car.

No need to say that I walked about half of the distance, stopping at a tap to splash water from head to toe and refill my bottle so as to keep pouring cold water on my head and neck on the return. I can't remember a run as horrible as this one! And tomorrow down to 22 degrees!

11.5km
AHR 114 (72%); MHR 132 (84%)
...even when walking, heart rate was up.

A Horrible Walk/Run!

Do be careful LL - running in the middle of the day is definitely NOT a good plan! The weather is certainly weird lately isn't it - 22deg tomorrow will be much easier for a gentle leg stretch. Drink lots of water.
